The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has again failed to begin fuel production at the Port Harcourt refinery in Rivers State. This is despite the refinery failing to commence operations after about six postponements as of August 2024. The PUNCH observed that promises made to Nigerians by the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources and NNPC about the refinery have continued to hit brick walls. The Federal Government has made moves towards reducing hunger among Nigerians with the expansion of its subsidized rice program to Lagos, Kano, and Borno states. The initiative aims to provide relief to citizens amid soaring market prices. The government is providing 30,000 metric tonnes of rice, equivalent to approximately 1,000 trucks carrying 600 bags each, at a subsidized price of N40,000 per 50kg bag. This is lower than the current market price of N90,000 to N100,000 per 50kg bag. The National Bureau of Statistics has stated that Nigeria recorded a reduction in petrol importation following the removal of fuel subsidy by President Bola Tinubu in May 2023. It also said the total of fuel imports reduced to 20.30 billion litres in 2023 from the 23.54 billion litres recorded in 2022, showing a decrease of 13.77 per cent year-on-year.
