Abdelmadjid Tebboune has been declared the winner of Algeria’s presidential election held on Saturday, securing a landslide victory with over 90% of the votes. Mohamed Charfi, head of the Algerian electoral commission, announced the results at a press conference on Sunday. He reported that Tebboune, the incumbent president, received 94.65% of the total votes. “Of 5,630,000 voters recorded, 5,320,000 voted for the independent candidate Abdelmadjid Tebboune, accounting for 94.65 percent,” Charfi said. Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has dismissed rumours of a potential hike in the Value-Added Tax (VAT) rate from 7.5% to 10%. In a statement released Monday, Edun clarified that the VAT rate is still firmly set at 7.5%, as outlined in Nigeria’s tax laws. “The current VAT rate is 7.5% and this is what the government is charging on a spectrum of goods and services to which the tax is applicable.
