ExxonMobil has refuted claims of being responsible for the recent oil spill in the Ibeno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, which affected over 27 coastal communities. The village head of Mkpanah, Denis Essenem, had attributed the spill to ExxonMobil, stating that the company is the only major oil operator in the area. The management of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), has issued an operational licence to Edo Refinery and Petrochemical Company Limited, Ologbo in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo. The NMDPRA is the Technical and Commercial Regulator of Midstream and Downstream Operations in the petroleum industry. Issuance of operational licence is the final stage of approval from the regulatory authority which implies that the plant can now fully operate as a refinery. Governor Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has directed the payment of the new national minimum wage of N70,000 to state and local government workers. According to the State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Emmanuel Fashe, state government workers will receive the new minimum wage from August 2024, while local government workers will benefit from September 2024. The bodies of six hostages have been retrieved from the Gaza Strip, Israel’s military says. A statement from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) says the bodies of Yagev Buchshtab, Alexander Dancyg, Avraham Munder, Yoram Metzger, Nadav Popplewell and Haim Perry were recovered from the Khan Younis area on Monday. The rescue operation was carried out by the IDF alongside the Israel Security Agency. The Hostage Families Forum said the recovery of the bodies had provided the families with “necessary closure”.
