Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has announced a statewide ban on the activities of house and land agents, effective from 2026.
The decision, according to the governor, is part of efforts to tackle the growing challenge of high rents and prevent the exploitation of residents by middlemen. He noted that some agents charge prospective tenants and buyers exorbitant fees, sometimes as high as ₦500,000, on properties that do not even belong to them.
Governor Nwifuru stressed that beginning next year, no individual or group will be permitted to collect money from residents seeking accommodation in the state, adding that the measure is intended to create a more transparent and affordable housing process for citizens.
