When his Excellency Senator Henry Seriake Dickson made the bold decision to choose his successor within the Peoples Democratic Party PDP, it was not a smooth political journey. The emergence of the current governor was met with intense resistance, internal party conflicts, and fierce political battles that tested the unity and strength of the party structure in Bayelsa State.
During that period, loyal party faithfuls stood firm, defending the party’s decision and ensuring that the mandate prevailed. It was not just a political contest it became a struggle that came with heavy sacrifices. Unfortunately, some dedicated members of the party lost their lives in the process, paying the ultimate price for their loyalty and belief in the leadership direction at the time.
What is deeply concerning today, however, is the reversal of roles. Those who openly opposed the emergence of the governor, who fought against the process and worked to destabilize the party’s chances, are now being embraced, celebrated, and positioned as key stakeholders almost as if they were the original architects of the victory.

Meanwhile, the very individuals who stood their ground during the storm those who defended the party when it mattered most are gradually being sidelined, ignored, and pushed to the margins of the same system they helped to sustain.
This contradiction raises fundamental questions about gratitude, political loyalty, reward systems, and the value placed on sacrifice within our political space. It sends a troubling message that standing firm in times of crisis may not necessarily guarantee recognition or inclusion when stability is finally achieved.
Politics should not be a space where loyalty is punished. A system that forgets its foot soldiers risks eroding trust, weakening its foundation, and discouraging genuine commitment in the future.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, there must be a conscious effort to restore balance – one that recognizes and honors those who stood when it was difficult, not just those who arrived when the victory was already secured.
The warning is clear: be cautious when playing politics. If you risk everything your peace, your relationships, or even your life for someone else’s political journey, do not be surprised if your sacrifice is overlooked. The politics here is not built on gratitude; it is built on shifting sands of interest mostly when it is not based on conviction but convenience.
