Manchester United forward Amad has confirmed the tragic news of his mother’s death.
The 22-year-old, who started for United in their 1-0 win over Fulham last Friday night, revealed the news on social media. Amad shared a picture of him as a child in his mother’s arms on Snapchat and added a short caption.
It read: “Rest in peace Mum, may Allah forgive you.” Since announcing the news, which has been relayed on X and other platforms, Amad has been inundated with condolences and messages from the football world.
United signed Amad from Italian side Atalanta in January 2021. The four-cap Ivory Coast forward went on to make his debut for the club shortly after – playing seven minutes in a Europa League showdown with Real Sociedad – as he subsequently detailed his relationship with a proud mother to MUFC media.
Speaking at the time, he said: “It was all so hard to believe. After I made my United debut against Real Sociedad, I called my mum after the game and she was in tears, saying that she couldn’t believe it.”
He continued: “For me, it was an incredible feeling because getting to play at the highest level only happens once in a lifetime. Mum was really proud of me.
“She was always confident that I would make it to the top, but she always told me to stay humble, work hard and never give up. So, when she saw me play those eight minutes, or so, it was everything to her.
“We couldn’t believe it.” Since his debut, Amad has totted-up 23 games for United, in all competitions, as well loan spells with Rangers in Scotland and then Championship side Sunderland.
