Abuja, September 1, 2025 – The Federal Government has raised an alarm over the likelihood of flooding in 107 local government areas across 29 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) between September 1 and September 15, 2025.
The warning was issued by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) in Abuja, citing projections from the 2025 Annual Flood Outlook.
According to the advisory signed by the Director-General, Umar Mohammed, the flood forecast is backed by real-time hydrometric readings, river stage predictions, and satellite monitoring.
NIHSA revealed that more than 631 communities and over 50 critical transport and infrastructure sites could be affected. Risk levels range from moderate to very high, with threats of river overbanking, flash floods, and localised inundation, especially in riverine and low-lying areas.
The states under close watch include:
Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, and Zamfara.
Residents in vulnerable communities have been urged to take precautionary measures, while relevant agencies are expected to intensify efforts to mitigate potential disasters.
